Calum Haggett century in second XI victory

All-rounder Calum Haggett continued his return from injury with a century and seven overs with the ball as Kent beat Hampshire comprehensively in the Second XI Championship match on the Isle of Wight.

Adam Riley won the toss and opted to bat first although the top order struggled with the new ball, slipping to 37 for three in the 18th over.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Callum Jackson steadied the ship with a gritty half-century before Calum Haggett added 150 for the sixth wicket with Scottish triallist Freddie Coleman (77) and 119 for the eighth wicket with Adam Riley (53 not out).

Riley declared after Haggett was dismissed after hitting 17 fours and a six in a Kent career-best 148.

In reply, England Under-19 opener Joe Weatherley was run out by Matt Hunn before Sam Weller removed his partner Ben Duggan next ball, caught behind by Jackson for 0.

Hunn dismissed Felix Organ (bowled) and Jake Goodwin (caught behind by Jackson) in successive overs.

Harry Dearden and Fraser Hay added 69 for the fifth wicket before Weller and Ball dismissed them both in successive overs to leave them on 120 for six.

The lower chip in some useful runs to frustrate Kent but Weller and Hunn took a third wicket each before Hugh Bernard mopped up the tail to help dismiss the hosts for 238 at tea on day 2.

There was still time for Kent to increase their 158-run lead with an aggressive session of batting: scoring 208 for four at almost a run a ball.

Geremy Fatouros hit 80 off 67 balls and Adam Ball scored a run-a-ball 41 before Kent declared at stumps on day two to leave Hampshire needing 367 on the final day to win.

Hunn and Weller struck again with the new ball and Bernard struck on his entry into the attack to leave Hampshire reeling on 38 for three in the 17th over.

Felix Organ provided resistance with a gritty 67 but ran out of partners.

Ball struck once and Weller returned to take three scalps to finish with 4/66 ad Hugh Bernard mopped up the tail to claim 3/30 in 8.4 overs.

Kent sealed a 190-run win to complete a treble after Monday’s Trophy win and the first XI’s Royal London One-Day Cup win, both at The Ageas Bowl.
