Charlotte Edwards signs for Perth Scorchers

Kent and England captain Charlotte Edwards has signed to play for Perth Scorchers in the inauguaral Women's Big Bash League in Australia this winter.

Edwards captained the Western Fury last season and will join England teammate Katherine Brunt in the WBBL this winter.

The record-breaking skipper will join Australia internationalsNicole Bolton, Jess Cameron and Elyse Villani who won the Kia Women's Test at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.

She said the Scorchers’ success in the BBL over the past few seasons would no doubt bring pressure on the women’s side to succeed, but she was sure the group would welcome it.

“I think they’ve been a really successful team in the Big Bash and to be at the Furnace when they’re playing is quite an unbelievable experience,” she told the West Australian.

“To experience that for myself last winter was really special and I’m just looking forward to being part of that.”

Edwards has chalked up the most runs in women’s T20 international history. She averages 33.31 in 84 T20 internationals, with a highest score of 92 not out.

The 35-year-old was named a Wisden cricketer of the year in 2014, one of two women to receive the honour.

Scorchers coach Mark Atkinson said Edwards' signing was big for the team and said: “Charlotte has been one of the best players in the world for a long time,” he said.

“It’s amazing to have her, for not only what she brings as a performer on the field, but her enthusiasm and leadership."

The WBBL begins on December 5 and the Scorchers play their first game against Brisbane Heat on December 11.
