Fabian Cowdrey scored 176 as Kent fell just short as they battled to salvage a draw against an experienced Gloucestershire second XI.

The Kent all-rounder batted for more than seven hours after Kent were dismissed for 97 and the visitors enforced the follow-on with a 303-run deficit on day two.

Gloucestershire’s Benny Howell hit a century in big stands with opener Will Tavare (66) and Ian Cockbain (56).

Kent seamer Hugh Bernard was the pick of the bowlers with 4/78 in 25 overs. Ivan Thomas took 2/83 and there was a wicket apiece for Charlie Hartley and Imran Qayyum.

Joe Barrett (44) and Liam Norwell (46) helped the Westcountrymen up to 400 runs before declaring.

Matt Taylor (3/26) dismissed Kent’s top three with the new ball before Howell capped a fine all-round match by taking 3/14 in 5.4 overs as he ripped through Kent’s middle-order resistance.

Second time round, Kent’s batsmen showed more durability and patience as Cowdrey led the resistance with 19 boundaries in his 312-ball knock.

The 23-year-old almost carried his bat before being dismissed in the final session, trapped LBW by Oliver Currill after Kent’s bowlers saw off 147 balls to help Cowdrey through to his 150.
