England women beat New Zealand to level series

England women levelled the series in New Zealand with a convincing 90-run win over the White Ferns at the Bay Oval.

Kent and England skipper Charlotte Edwards won the toss and elected to bat, top-scoring as England posted 194 in the second one-day international at Mount Maunganui.

The tourists picked up two points in the ICC World Championship despite the side being dismissed with four balls to spare.

England recovered from losing the early wickets of opener Heather Knight (5) and Lauren Whitfield (14) as wicketkeeper-batsman Sarah Taylor struck a flowing 45 from 41 balls to add 68 for the third wicket.

Edwards led by example with a more patient knock, striking 65 off 100 balls including nine boundaries in two-and-a-half hours at the crease.

The opener finally departed as former Kent bowler Erin Bermingham (2-37) bowled her former colleague.

Kent's Lydia Greenway was cleaned bowled for 0 by Anna Peterson, who collected four wickets for 25 runs off just 7.2 overs.

In reply, New Zealand faced an uphill struggle when talismanic White Ferns captain Suzie Bates was run out by her counterpart Edwards for an 11-ball duck.

Somerset seamer Anya Shrubsole was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-36 in ten overs as England dismissed the hosts for 104.
