England women lost the first clash of an eight-match series against New Zealand today at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

The White Ferns triumphed despite Kent and England skipper Charlotte Edwards winning the toss and electing to bowl in gloomy conditions.

NZ captain Suzie Bates led by example and hit a flowing 106 off 113 balls, putting on 157 for the first wicket with opening partner Rachel Priest (52).

Heather Knight was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 4-47 as the hosts set the tourists a target of 241 to win off 50 overs.

Slow left armer Rebecca Grundy (1/35) earned her ODI debut but there was no place for Kent's Laura Marsh.

In reply, both of Kent's representatives got good starts but could not capitalise as a familiar foe shone with the ball.

Like her opening partner, Charlotte Edwards (26) was run out before Lydia Greenway (27) was clean bowled by former Kent teammate Erin Bermingham.

Danielle Hazell (17) and Anya Shrubsole (29) added 47 for the ninth wicket before a third run out saw Hazell depart as England fell 67 runs short.

The second ODI will be played at the Bay Oval on Tuesday at 9.30pm GMT.
