Kent paceman Mitch Claydon will play for Central Districts Stags in the Georgie Pie Super Smash next month.

The 32-year-old who is spending the winter as captain-coach at Newcastle City will fly to New Zealand to take part in the six-week tournament.

Claydon told the Newcastle Herald: "Obviously City are very understanding, and at the end of the day it's my job and I'm not going to play forever.

"This has come along after a good T20 season in England and it's another opportunity.

"You never know, if you can do well in these competitions, it just keeps you in there."

CD coach Heinrich Malan told Hawkes Bay Today: "He's not an express bowler but a clever one. We need someone with a calm head especially in Twenty20 where we have had people who have only played a handful of games.
"It's important we have people out there with calm heads so he definitely brings that to the party for us."

Claydon will play alongside Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene and Essex all-rounder Jesse Ryder at Central Districts.
