Rain ruins Trent Bridge tie

Nottinghamshire Outlaws and Kent Spitfires were both able to maintain their unbeaten starts to the Royal London One Day Cup after heavy rain prevented a finish in their clash at Trent Bridge.

After earlier interruptions had reduced the contest to 38 overs per side, Notts made 228 for seven after winning the toss.

Kent, set to score 232 under the Duckworth-Lewis method, had reached 48 for two when the wet weather returned, with only eight overs having been bowled by the home side.

Steven Mullaney had top-scored with 62 from 60 balls for Notts. The all-rounder, moved up to number three in the order with both Alex Hales and James Taylor away on England Lions duty, had arrived at the wicket in the fourth over, after the early departure of Sam Kelsall.

He was put down on 28, in the covers by Sam Northeast, and was then caught at deep midwicket by Alex Blake but the fielder had to release the ball back into play as he stepped over the ropes.

Within one run of the career best 63 not out, he made against Glamorgan last week, Mullaney hit Mitchell Claydon out to Darren Stevens at long on.

Michael Lumb had earlier fallen for 37 but the tempo was maintained by the middle order. Samit Patel made 33 and both Riki Wessels, 29 from just 18 deliveries, and James Franklin, 30 from 20, twice cleared the ropes in the quest for late runs.

Claydon emerged with the best figures for the Spitfires, taking three for 37, whilst Doug Bollinger took two for 69.

Kent lost Daniel Bell-Drummond in the first over of the chase, edging Jake Ball behind. Northeast should have followed to the same bowler, but was spilled by Patel at second slip.

Ben Harmison crashed 19 from 15 balls, with three fours and a huge six over long on, off Ball, but he lost his partner just as Kent had moved ahead on D/L.

Northeast's vigorous pull off Shahzad was mistimed high into the air and as the bowler took the return catch the conditions deteriorated rapidly, leaving each side to contend themselves with a point

Kent move to the top of Group B, with eight points from five matches, whilst the Outlaws sit third in the table, on six points from four matches.
