Ryan Davies helps Sandwich Town reach regional indoor final

Kent wicketkeeper Ryan Davies helped indoor champions Sandwich Town overcome Sussex winners Preston Nomads to reach the regional final of the National Indoor Cup.

Sandwich skipper Craig Spanton won the toss and chose to bat first with Craig Snell and Ryan Davies opening at the home of Kent Cricket.

The first three overs were on the money from the Sussex side, with the first over of orthodox left arm spin followed up two overs of fiery short pitched bowling. By the end of the third over Sandwich were looking uneasy on 23-2.

Looking to rebuild, Davies and Chapman played sensibly to take the innings to a steady 61-2 by the end of the eighth over with Davies retiring on 25. In at five, Spanton showed his intent by hitting a couple of hard run threes and put the pressure back on the fielding side. Shortly afterwards Chapman also retired on 25.

Some hard hitting from Hodgson and Spanton saw the latter retire to bring back in Davies (run out trying to keep strike for the final over) and then Chapman to nail another boundary which took Sandwich onto a 125-3, a phenomenal recovery.

Opening the bowling, Hodgson conceded one from the first over, followed up by Smith who only conceded 4 from the second. Incredibly tight bowling from Sandwich saw Preston Nomads struggling to find the walls and on 29-1 at the halfway stage.

Coming on after the opening spell, Craig Snell claimed two wickets by the end of the eighth over to leave the visitors 44-3 needing 82 from 24 balls. Despite some valiant efforts in the final throws of the game, Sandwich won comfortably to see them progress to the regional finals.

The regional finals will take place also in the Ames Levett Indoor School, Canterbury on Sunday 1st March 2015.
