Support The Tom Maynard Trust Bike Ride

Earlier this month, the Maynard family gave the go-aheadfor the establishment of a trust in the name of former Surrey batsman Tom Maynard, who died tragically on 18th June.

The Tom Maynard Trust will exist initially to help the development of aspiring disadvantaged cricketers and other sportspeople who require support with different aspects of their career development, including bursaries, help with training and education, financial support for overseas placements and assistance with kit and equipment.

Sponsored Bike Ride

The first fundraising event for the Tom Maynard Trust will be a sponsored bike ride from the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff to the Kia Oval undertaken by Ian Williams and Martin Loosemore, friends of the Maynard family, as well as former Glamorgan and England batsman Steve James.

The riders, who are also expected to be joined by Matthew Maynard for part of their trip, will aim to arrive at the Kia Oval shortly before the start of the Clydesdale Bank 40 match between Surrey and Glamorgan on Tuesday August 21st.

A Just Giving page to allow for donations to the ride has been set up, and there is also a fundraising event planned at Newbury Rugby Club on the evening of Tuesday August 20th, more details of which will be announced soon.

If you wish to support the event, please click here to donate through the Just Giving website.

The Tom Maynard Trust

The establishment of the Tom Maynard Trust is to be supported by individuals connected with the two county cricket clubs Tom represented during his playing career – Surrey and Glamorgan – and one of the Trustees will also be a nominee of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, with whom the Trust is expected to work closely as it grows and develops.

More information will be made available next month when Surrey CCC use the occasion of its CB40 match against Glamorgan at the Kia Oval on 21st August to commemorate Tom’s life.

Richard Thompson, Chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club, said: “In addition to his considerable talent, Tom was an incredibly popular young man and the establishment of a Trust will ensure that his name will not be forgotten. It is fitting that the objectives should focus on helping aspiring young cricketers and I am sure that an enormous number of people will benefit in years to come.”

Martyn Ryan, a friend of the Maynard family and one of the founding Trustees, added: “This has been such an incredibly difficult time for the family but the suggestion of a Trust in Tom’s name will provide a real focus for them and help to keep Tom’s name alive.

“At this stage we’re looking at some objectives based around helping emerging disadvantaged cricketers but we recognise that these things evolve and we hope that as the concept grows we can consider other ways of providing help for young people. We’re pleased that it will involve personnel connected with both of Tom’s clubs as well as the PCA, an organisation his father Matthew continues to be such a proud champion of.”

Donations to the Tom Maynard Trust can also be made by contacting Jon Rees, Carston Accountants, Tudor House, 16 Cathedral Road, Cardiff CF11 9LJ. Cheques should be made payable to ‘The Tom Maynard Trust’.
