Kent vice-captain Tammy Beaumont struck an impressive half-century as England Women's Academy pushed world champions Australia all the way in a 15-run defeat at Taunton Vale.

Beaumont led from the front as on-field skipper with 61 off 92 deliveries and Wilson chipped in with a 60-ball 64 but the target of 250 proved to be just out of reach as EWA ended their 50 overs on 234 for nine.

The Dover-born Kent Cricket Academy graduate said: "We got off to a good start but their spinners kind of showed their experience in the middle and pushed the run-rate up so we started having to push on a little bit.

"We were unfortunate to fall short but can be proud. Obviously it's nice to get to sixty but I think having got there I should have taken responsibility, batted through and got us as close as I could."

EWA had earlier restricted Australia to 249 for eight, a total which owed much to Ellyse Perry's 93. Freya Davies and Jodie Dibble each took two wickets, while Danielle Hazell and Tash Farrant chipped in with one apiece.

"The outfield was really quick here and it was a good wicket so we were happy to keep them to under 250," added Beaumont.
