Youngsters impress in Jersey 20-over matches

Fabian Cowdrey produced a fine all-round display and Kent Cricket Academy bowler Piers Richardson took 4-20 as a young Kent XI beat Jersey in one of two 20-over friendly matches on the Channel Island today.

Openers Cowdrey (48) and Alex Blake (44) got the visitors off to a flying start as they posted 79 for the first wicket in 8.1 overs.

Triallist Adam Rouse scored 23 off 26 balls and England Under 19s wicketkeeper Ryan Davies hit 28 off 18 balls as Kent posted 167 for four in 20 overs.

In reply, Imran Qayyum took 2-15 off two overs and Adam Ball claimed a wicket and a run-out to restrict the hosts to 105.

South African batsman Cornelis Bodenstein provided the only resistance with 52 before Cowdrey dismissed him and later wrapped up the innings with 2-23 off 3.3 overs to seal a 62-run win.

In a second game reduced to 14 overs a side, Kent posted 85 with only Davies, Cowdrey, Blake and Qayyum reaching double figures.

In reply, Jersey passed the target with 19 balls to spare although they took seven wickets with Imran Qayyum and Academy bowler Ben Stock taking three each as well as one of England Under 19 seamer Hugh Bernard.
