Player Biography

Rob Key was the second longest-serving post-war Kent captain after nine years at the helm in two spells.

During his first spell as captain, Rob led Kent to T20 glory in 2007 and to the Second Division title in 2009.

The Beckenham-raised batsman has played for England in all three formats between 2002 and 2005: appearing in 15 Tests, 5 One-Day Internationals and a Twenty20 International.

The elegant batsman enjoyed seven years leading the county before deciding to step down; a decision that certainly didn’t hamper his batting with Rob enjoying another run-laden summer in 2013.

The experienced opener was Kent’s top-scorer in the 2014 Natwest T20 Blast before injury restricted his involvement in limited-overs cricket in 2015 as a young batting unit helped Kent Spitfires reached two quarter-finals.

Rob is now closing in on 20,000 first-class runs, making him one of the most prolific batsmen of all time in England’s domestic game. On top of that, Rob has scored 6,469 List A runs, a total that includes eight centuries.

He was capped in 2001, was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2005 before his benefit year in 2011.

Rob announced his retirement from the game in April 2016.
